Our Beliefs

As Canadian Baptists, we share many beliefs with other Christians, including one God, the human and divine nature of Jesus Christ and the significance of his crucifixion and resurrection for salvation. Baptists emerged from the desire to follow New Testament teaching as we understood it:

The Lordship of Jesus Christ: Jesus is Lord of our church and the individual. He effectively secured salvation for all creation through his death, burial and resurrection. Every area in the believer’s life and the life of the church is to be subject to the Lord. He is the supreme authority.

The authority of the scriptures: We believe that the scriptures are inspired by God. They are the only perfect, supreme, infallible and sufficient standard of faith and practice.

The Priesthood of the Believer: Baptists hold that all believers share as equals in the church, and, in every turn, have a priestly role toward each other. Every member is called to be a minister.

Baptism: Baptists practice believer’s baptism by immersion. It is one of the first significant acts through which the believer proclaims personal faith in Christ and is initiated into church life and ministry.

Local church autonomy: We believe that government of the local church is competent to look after its own affairs and has freedom from coercion by other bodies. However we value cooperation among churches of “like faith and order”.

The role of women in the church: We believe that both women and men have roles to play in the leadership and work within the church, which is why you will see female pastors, deacons and other ministry leaders at Stevens Road United Baptist Church.
